Rub Elbows With Royalty at The Goring, London

The infamous Duchess of Cambridge herself, Mrs. Kate Middleton, spent the night before the royal wedding at this glamorous and very ‘English’ hotel nestled in Belgravia, a district in London within the City of Westminster. After four nights of enjoyably pretentious British charm, it’s easy to see why this is where royalty comes to relax, escape, and unwind…if such a thing is possible for the megastars of the monarchy.

Nestled close to Victoria Station, The Goring is perfectly situated to explore all of London and a welcome site for the weary at the end of a long day. Rooms are exquisitely decorated with chandeliers, rich wood, mood lighting and they come with fantastic Molton Brown amenities, Egyptian cotton sheets, bottled waters, slippers (that my husband still wears!) and complimentary morning newspapers. In a delicious British twist, the keys are traditional house keys, attached to a fairly large golden placard. Sound like a pain to carry in your purse? Well don’t worry, when you leave for the day you are welcome to drop the key at the front desk for safekeeping.

Feeling hungry after all that exploring? Recently bestowed a Michelin Star (and one of only four restaurants in London to enjoy that accolade), The Dining Room offers delicious takes on traditional British favorites like Beef Wellington and Roast Cornish Cod.

Far and away, our favorite part of this five-star meal was the cheese trolley for dessert! Cheese for dessert had never quite occurred to me before and my life will now never be the same. With patient grace, our server carved us healthy helpings of any and all cheeses we had an interest in trying, right at the table.

Luxury this ridiculous doesn’t come cheap–rooms generally cost over 400£+— but as they say, you get what you pay for. Our best advice is to join Amex’s Fine Resorts program, which often has ‘4 nights for the price of 3’ specials, gives automatic room upgrades, $100 credit (which we used for dinner) and late/early check in and out.

Can’t swing a stay at this swanky hotel? Give Afternoon Tea a try, it’s one of the finest in London and a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in what being British is all about—a good ‘cuppa’. Afternoon tea goes daily from 3-4:00 and also from 1-4:00 on Saturdays and offers guests the chance to take tea either in the luxurious gardens or the bar and lounge. Tea is available with champagne (at additional cost) and is served with classic British finger sandwiches, clotted cream, pastries and desserts. A fine experience that’s not to be missed. Insider Tip: We heard it’s rude to lift your pinky!

We highly recommend The Goring for an elevated hotel experience, especially to get a taste of true British charm. If you can make it happen, the staff and the warm, elegant atmosphere will have you leaving your stay feeling like The Duchess of Cambridge herself.
