Have you ever met a ‘happy cryer?’ You know the type, you show them a pretty sunset or tell them a feel-good story and there they go, welling up to the brim with salty tears of overwhelming joy and emotion? Yeah, that’s me. I cry at a lot but getting worked up while I was facedown on a massage table wasn’t ever really one of the places I expected to be surprised by my quirky personality trait but…there I was. The music was peaceful, my mind was calm, Bethany’s hands were gently working my muscles into pure unadulterated bliss…and I was tearing up (just a little!). That’s how good my body scrub at Spa Anjali and the rest of our stay was at The Westin Riverfront in Avon, Colorado.
At just under a two-hour drive from Denver, The Westin Riverfront is in a great location for a family getaway, especially if you’re interested in mountain activities and are a bit of a resort person (Avon isn’t necessarily a walking-style town like Breckenridge). With their $3 million renovation completed in January, they’re now ready to entertain a world-class crowd and are a great choice for those interested in physical activities and health. The gym area boasts a host of amenities and activities catered to the active crowd such as a full gym, pilates/barre/yoga classes and even triathlete training programs with current XTERRA World Champion, Josiah Middaugh.
Feel like taking it easy and relaxing poolside instead? It’s got a beautiful view, so go right ahead and don’t miss the Sunday evening pool parties with a DJ and food/drink specials. When you’re tired of lounging and want to venture into the great outdoors, The Westin also offers a wide range of summer activities like fly fishing, kayaking, jeep tours, golf and horse back riding and in the winter they are happy to help arrange ice skating, snowmobiling and even dog-sledding.
If the locals are coming to hang on at a hotel on Friday nights, you know it’s probably the place to be. The Westin Riverfront is the place to catch ‘Friday Afternoon Club’, from June—September, a large-scale patio party on the deck overlooking the river and complete with taco stands, live bands and drink specials. Our server, Lennis, excitedly told us that ‘we sometimes get upwards of 600 people and the bands are playing and everyone’s drinking and having a great time. It’s a ton of locals too.’ If you want to rub elbows with the townies, it sounds like it’s a heck of a time and runs through Sept. 9th.
Accommodations are comfortable, classy and homey. Fireplaces in some rooms are a added bonus! I only wish it had been winter and we had just come back from the slopes to sip hot cocoa and snuggle nearby while giggling at how amazing life is but…I digress. The rooms are delightful and our studio suite even came with a small kitchenette including balcony door, basic stovetop, toasters, silverware, bottle openers, salt and pepper and a host of other amenities. The Westin is also Fido-friendly, which can be a blessing for responsible dog-owners wanting to bring their baby—but look out for (and don’t be) the less-conscious guests. We had to call down about the multiple howling hounds left unattended in the room next door, but our complaint was quickly tackled by staff.
Craving some carbs after all that activity? Let the uber-friendly staff of Maya, the on-site modern Mexican restaurant by acclaimed Chef Richard Sandoval, sweep you off your feet and plant a delicious margarita in your hands. This kid-friendly restaurant serves up savory takes on traditional guacamole like the Tuna Tartare Guac with wonton chips or the Bacon Guac—and they’re all made fresh at the table. The cornerstone of any good meal, Maya also makes fantastic margs and cocktails. We shared the Sandia Tajin, the prickly pear marg, a mango marg and the house Maya marg—all of which were incredible — but the prickly pear is definitely the sweetest, which I personally enjoy, but it’s not for everyone.
For mains, our friendly server, Becca, recommended the carne asada and the crab and shrimp enchiladas, both of which were lovely. My favorite came when it was dessert time and being the fickle woman I am, I couldn’t decide. Becca pulled some strings and the kitchen was able to whip up a sinful sample platter with a taste of the chocolate flan, Mexican fried ice cream, and a s’mores crepe. They were all great but husband and I both agreed: the s’mores crepe takes the cake!
On the day we left we paid a visit to Spa Anjali. I was a bit nervous before my appointment because I didn’t know what to expect. There aren’t many photos of the lounge area or locker room online, and I wasn’t even sure if they had a sauna or steam room, so I was pleasantly surprised when I realized they had both—and more. After entering the spa via the long hallway, you pass through a relaxation room with curtained lounge chairs and a rock sculpture where water slowly drips from the ceiling, creating a soothing and relaxing background. The locker rooms are glamorous and well-kept with fresh cucumbers, towels, extremely soft terrycloth robes and toiletries. Take a sauna or a steam and then grab a handful of snacks and some tea while you wait for your appointment in a lounge chair.
I received the Mountain Nectar Body Scrub and it was simply divine. I don’t generally like body scrubs, so I was beyond pleased to realize my provider, Bethany, knew exactly how to make the session both beneficial and enjoyable. It was more like a scrub/massage combo, with various scrubs and lotions being applied and gently massaged into your skin before being wiped away by a steaming towel (ohh….ohhhh when she applied the towels I thought I might sink right through the table). The music was perfection and her touch was caring and gentle, so much so that it made me this strange sort of emotional where I got all teary eyed on the table. If you have a transcendental experience during a spa service, you know it was good!
Our stay at The Westin Riverfront was short, but oh-so-sweet, and we highly recommend it for a family vacation or for those looking to relax and unwind after a day in the outdoors. Check Agoda or TripAdvisor for the best rates.
